RESUMO:

This work focuses on the phases of female life in the Iny Karajá culture, highlighting the history of the Ijadòòma/Ijadòkòma female initiation ritual, which marks the passage of the girl to adult life after her first menstruation. In it, the young woman goes through a period of recollection, receives teachings about the social role and traditions of the people, also avoiding certain activities during this period. The ritual serves for spiritual protection and special care with food and behavior is part of it. In the life of the Iny, it is not only a passage as a biological age, but as a spiritual and social process, always connected to nature, the community and the ancestors.
