RESUMO:

Brazil is a privileged nation compared to other countries in the world due to its abundance of water resources and their consequent multiple uses. Nevertheless, the collection and treatment rates of effluents are insufficient when compared to the total sewage produced. This notable challenge becomes more evident as we move away from major urban centers and closer to rural regions. These regional characteristics were identified in the municipality of Cáceres - Pantanal - Brazil, where this work was conducted. In this perspective, the need to propose an alternative sewage treatment that serves the population is evident, provided that it is suitable and efficient according to acceptable parameters for wastewater treatment. Thus, Constructed Wetlands have emerged as a potentially viable alternative, as they make use of natural resources and offer various levels of treatment, as observed in other studies, leading to reductions in Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Suspended Solids, Ammonium Nitrogen, Nitrate, Nitrite, and Total Phosphorus.

To confirm the feasibility of this treatment system, laboratory simulations of constructed wetlands were first conducted, using effluent collected on-site while preserving its characteristics. After the experiments were carried out, satisfactory pollutant removals were observed after 20 hours of testing, with the following results: Biochemical Oxygen Demand removal was 15%; Chemical Oxygen Demand 70%; suspended solids exhibited a 90% removal rate, total phosphorus 88%, nitrate 80%, nitrite 65%, and ammonia showed an 85% removal rate. These factors indicate the potential efficiency of the system for a wastewater treatment plant in the city. Consequently, a Constructed Wetlands project was developed for implementation at the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Cáceres-MT, in the Cohab Nova neighborhood, along with a Technical Report for the city's Public Utility containing relevant information from this research.
