RESUMO:

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic metal for humans and of great environmental concern, in particular because of its high volatility, long atmospheric residence time and intrinsic toxicity, particularly in its methylated form (MeHg). The speciation of Hg in MeHg in environments is highly dependent on its mobility (lability) and available environmental factors, such as pH, Temperature and also the Presence of organic compounds. In the Amazon, much of the Hg found in the water comes both from mines and from the region's own soil, which is rich in the metal (Roulet, 1999). Hg easily chelates to various compounds (e.g. organic matter), but has cycles of bioavailability (lability) dictated by environmental factors. Accurately determining the dynamics of the metal's bioavailability, as well as the environmental factors controlling the formation of MeHg, are still goals of the scientific community. The Diffusive Thin Film Gradient (DGT) technique is a promising tool for in situ analysis of “free” metals. The DGT device uses a diffusion layer, conventionally a polyacrylamide hydrogel and a binding agent, typically a compound highly affine to the analyte under study, impregnated into a polyacrylamide hydrogel. The function of the diffusion layer is to promote a constant level of diffusion of the metallic element to be retained by the binding agent, regardless of changes in the flow of the system where the device is immersed.
