RESUMO:

Even though Brazil is a country abundant in water resources, it has insufficient indices when it comes to basic sanitation, especially in wastewater collection and treatment. This difficulty becomes more evident as one moves away from major urban centers towards rural areas. The milestone for basic sanitation in Brazil occurred recently with Law No. 14,026/2020. This law was enacted in July 2020 with the aim of promoting universalization and improvement of basic sanitation services in the country. Despite the new milestone in basic sanitation seeking to boost investments, improve service efficiency, and expand the population's access to clean water and wastewater treatment, this still seems distant for the majority of the population, even though it represents an attempt to overcome historical challenges in the sector in Brazil and move towards universalizing basic sanitation in the country. From this perspective, the need to propose an alternative wastewater treatment that meets the population's needs becomes evident, as long as it is suitable and efficient according to acceptable parameters for wastewater treatment. In this regard, Constructed Wetlands present themselves as a viable alternative, as they utilize natural resources and, at various treatment levels as observed in other studies, show a decrease in indices such as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Suspended Solids, Ammoniacal Nitrogen, Nitrates, Nitrites, and Total Phosphorus. To test the feasibility of applying this treatment system in a small Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in the municipality of Cáceres - MT, it was necessary to initially collect the effluent on-site, ensuring that its characteristics were preserved. The chosen macrophyte for this experiment was Heliconia sp, which was selected due to its adaptability to the region and its ornamental value. Subsequently, a scaled-down system was implemented to evaluate the obtained results, which were: COD (70% reduction), BOD (15% reduction), Suspended Solids (90% removal), Total Phosphorus (88% removal), Nitrate (80%), Nitrite (65%), Ammonia (85%). Due to these preliminary results from bench-scale tests being considered satisfactory, the sizing of the Constructed Wetlands for the WWTP was carried out. The ultimate goal is for Constructed Wetlands to be a viable alternative for wastewater treatment, aiming to meet the community's needs. It is important to emphasize that the implementation of any wastewater treatment system requires specific technical studies, taking into account local characteristics, environmental regulations, and public health guidelines. As a result, a project was developed for the installation of a constructed wetland in this studied WWTP.
