RESUMO:
The disorderly growth of cities, coupled with the lack of urban planning, provided a series of environmental impacts. Deficiencies in the basic sanitation system are one of the main causes of water pollution. The actions aimed at greater insertion of sanitation in municipalities are forms of intervention aimed at preserving, maintaining and restoring the quality of the environment, in order to ensure health for human life and environmental health through the collection and disposal of solid, liquid, gases and drinking water supply. In this context, the choice of an adequate system for the treatment of effluents, especially in developing regions, such as the State of Mato Grosso (great influence on the Brazilian trade balance in the agricultural sector) must be aligned with the costs of operation and implementation, as well as the sustainability of the Sewage Treatment Station (ETE). The built wetland systems have been shown to be efficient and versatile in reducing biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids, nitrogen, phosphorus, pathogenic organisms and trace metals. The removal of these pollutants occurs through mechanisms of filtration, adsorption, sedimentation, decomposition, microbial metabolism and the metabolism of aquatic plants. The present work goal to carry out a bibliographic review about the wetland systems built in the Midwest region, mainly in Mato Grosso State, since there is a growing demand for alternative technologies, even though it has been known for a long time, not widespread in the State , and which demand affordable installation, operation and maintenance costs for the treatment of effluents, whether in a small town WWTP or in emerging industries such as after-treatment.
