ALTERNATIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR STORAGE AND USE OF WATER IN SMALL RURAL PROPERTIES
Water management; Rural sanitation; Water security; Social technologies.
The lack of access to water can happen even in countries with abundant resources, such as Brazil. Due to its continental dimension and the non-homogeneous distribution of water throughout the territory, Brazil, while concentrating a generous portion of all freshwater available in the world, has some of its inhabitants with considerable difficulty in accessing water. This access is measured not only in quantity but also in quality, it is necessary to guarantee access to personal hygiene, food security, and domestic activities. This type of difficulty can occur in the peripheral regions of cities, however, higher rates of lack of water occur in small rural properties, especially those with characteristics of subsistence production. Several technologies have been developed over time to assist in the distribution and storage of water in these locations. However, many of these technologies fall short of the possibility of implementation by subsistence rural properties, either due to their high cost or due to the lack of specialized labor in their maintenance. On the other hand, several low-cost social technologies are proposed with the objective of assisting the rural owner in the distribution and storage of the resource with low costs and easy maintenance. In view of this, the present work addresses a range of alternative social technologies, which can be implemented by small producers themselves, through an explanatory manual, which will bring the applications of each technology, as well as its installation and maintenance mode, indicating the advantages and necessary care.
