Based on the literary work A mala de fugi e outro contos, taken as an object of investigation, this research dealt with the relationship between popular culture, memory and history. The book, by Mato Grosso writer Luís Carlos Ribeiro, was chosen because it brings together narratives that intertwine memories, domestic facts and stories of the people, allowing connections with the central axes of this examination. It was assumed that myths, legends and stories express an important layer of collective memory, keeping traces linked to the place of the narrator, installed in a cultural environment with specific features of popular tradition. The general objective of the research was to expand studies that link literature to popular culture; more specifically, it was intended to: relate the concepts of memory, history and oral narratives; analyze the narratives of A suitcase to escape in the light of literary theory; check autobiographical and historical facts pointed out in the stories in A mala de fugi; and highlight the wonderful as an important element of popular culture. The research followed the following path: first, some connections were established between literature, history, memory and popular narratives; Then, there was a discussion about culture, looking for elements that mainly characterize popular culture; Finally, the research presents an analysis of the narratives of A mala de fugi, emphasizing the wonderful aspect. Qualitative research is based on bibliographic review, literary analysis and concept verification. In the theoretical support of the research, several works were used to meet the segments proposed in the research. To address the relationship between literature and history: Memory, history, oblivion (2007), by Paul Ricouer, The order of discourse, by Michel Foucault (1996), What is cultural history? (2005), by Peter Burke. To address the relationship between literature and memory: History and memory (1990), by Jacques Le Goff, Memory and society (2005), by Ecléa Bosi, A Memória Coletiva (1990), by Maurice Halbwachs, Matter and memory (1999), by Henri Bergson. To deal with literature and narratives of popular culture: “The right to literature”, essay by Antonio Candido, published in Various Writings (2004), Simple Forms (1976), by André Jolles, As historical roots of the wonderful tale (2002) and Morphology of the Wonderful Tale (2010), by Vladimir Propp. To deal with the marvelous and marvelous realism: O marvelous realism, (1980), by Irlemar Chiampi, Introduction to fantastic literature (1992) and Narrative structures (2006), by Tzevan Todorov.
