In this study, we aimed to comprehend the sense effects produced by the different designations of ayahuasca tea in contemporary Brazilian media. For this purpose, we chose two reports as our object: Ayahuasca: Profissão Repórter; and Ayahuasca Tea can, indeed, cause psychosis and even kill. To analyze them, we based on French Discourse Analysis. We mobilized, especially the concepts: interdiscourse; pre-constructed and discursive memory. Such concepts allow us to recover discourses that are prior and external to the designations. On the other hand, they highlight the presence of discourses that are part of their horizontality, provoking doubts/conflicts of different orders. Discussing the sense effects on ayahuasca in the media is extremely relevant from both: social and linguistic point of view. Firstly, because it addresses a controversial and recurring issue in contemporary society: ayahuasca is sometimes understood as a sacred tea, sometimes as a highly harmful drug to health. Secondly, because it calls attention to the relation between language and society, emphasizing mostly the socio-historical and ideological relations that constitute/enable senses. Thus, we hope to contribute to broadening reflection on the topic, and, consequently, to establish dialogue between society and groups of ayahuasca users that are part of it, over time, challenging superficial and prejudiced conceptions, commonly spread by the media. In this way, we also contributed to advancing the discussion about the effects of psychoactive substances in our society.
