RESUMO:

Women in Mozambique have always faced segregation and violence imposed by the male power present in that country's society. After colonization, this situation only got worse, because now they would be mistreated both by their countrymen and by the colonizers. The aim of this research is to analyze, from the reading of Mia Couto's novel A confissão da leoa, by Mia Couto the socio-historical context that imposes a condition of social segregation on women in Mozambique. Some authors used in the research are Bosi (1974), Chabal (1994), Bonnici (2007), Dalcastagnè (2007), Couto (2012), Guimarães and Tutikian (2014), Leite (2020), among others. Other materials used were found in databases such as Scielo – Scientific Electronic Library Online. Through the study, Mia Couto’s intention to denounce the mistreatment experienced by Mozambican women is clearly perceived and, more than that, it made it clear that through union, women may overcome the ties that imprison and kill them.
