RESUMO:

This research is concerned to tracing a historiographical reconstruction of Beauty and Ugliness in two distinct moments, starting by the mythological narratives that originated in Ancient Greece, and by doing so, we can trace the mythical bases which will support the ideal of these antitheses. There, we have deities such as Aphrodite, Eros, Psyche, Narcissus and Apollo that were and still are references of what may be considered Beauty. On the steps of the same thinking of analyzes, we aim to go through those images of Beauty and Ugliness which are constructed on some passages of Iliad, more precisely on the Beauty of Helena, which despite of being on second plan as an element that triggers the Trojan War, her beautiful image shows itself as a source which may be used to establish dialogues with the concepts of Beauty or Ugliness in the contemporaneity. Along with other texts that relates to the mythical narratives that speaks of the same issue, the Beauty, will be used, like the mythical text that narrates the discord caused by the goddess Eris, who incites Aphrodite, Athena and Hera to dispute for the title of the most beautiful goddess of the Olympian and, in order to do so, one of Hamilton’s book (1973) will be used to work with. The hypothesis of this research is based on the idea that these millennials Beauty and Ugliness concepts appears strongly in today’s society. For this confirmation, the purpose of this text is to present a brief contextualization of the Aristotelian rhetoric to understand how the discourse of Beauty impact on the daily life of the narrator voice in Nojo (2020), by Divanize Carbonieri, and how it influences the subjects considered ugly to struggle for a standard of Beauty. So, this book of hers will be used as an object of study which aims to explore and show the dark side of the requirements that the hegemonic image of Beauty demands, especially the women’s, which is pressed by discourses that dictate strictly how modern women must look like in order to fit today’s beauty standards. Therefore, this paper also aims to reflect on these standards in order to contribute to deconstruct these images of Beauty that are dated, circumstantial and cultural, in a way that does not include the majority, and let alone include the diversity of beauties that exists in the plurality of the beings, more specifically the women’s. For this, the research will have the following theorists, and philosophers: Hamilton (1973), Aristotle (2023), Plato (1972), Bulfinch (2006), Lima (2011), Eco (2014), Bakhtin (1997), among others.
