RESUMO:
This master’s dissertation aimed to collaborate with the re-signification of the identity of black children, focusing on issues such as the symbolism of hair by analyzing the fifth edition of the book Cabelo Ruim? written by Neusa Baptista Pinto, released in 2020. It became relevant to conduct a study of the narrative and the illustrations of the black girls who are the main characters in the book selected for the investigation. This was a bibliographical research of exploratory, qualitative nature, which supported the furthering of the discussions. We used as theoretical support studies that are connected to research on Afro-Brazilian literature, ethnic-racial relations, identities, and critical racial literacy. We based our analysis on the reflections of Gomes (2005, 2008, 2011), which helped to ponder on the human body and hair as symbols of black identity. The analysis demanded a deep exploration of the concepts of race, racism, and identity. To support the discussions raised in this research were used theorists such as Cuti (2010), Debus (2007, 2009, 2012, 2017), Duarte (2009, 2014), Fanon (2008), Hall (2020) and many others of equal relevance. The results indicated the importance of including works such as Cabelo Ruim?, (2020), in the literary context of children, since these readings will enable them to reflect on their realities, especially the black girls who are the victims of prejudiced speech regarding her physical characteristics.
