RESUMO:

This research aims to analyze the Portuguese language learning experiences of deaf students. I intend to understand how the language learning process takes place from the perspective of these students and to understand the meanings they attribute to this experience. This is a study with an interpretative qualitative approach (MOITA LOPES, 1996), whose research context is a special needs education center located in the north of the state of Mato Grosso. The research participants are four deaf students enrolled in elementary school, who are between seven and nine years old. The data was collected through drawings, understood here as visual narratives (BRANDÃO, 2017; PÉREZ-PIETX, 2019), in which participants represent the experience of learning Portuguese. The drawings facilitate the understanding and expression of the deaf child, as they are already part of their daily lives. Furthermore, deaf people communicate essentially through the visual modality. The adoption of a visual method as a data collection instrument therefore offers deaf students more resources to express themselves during the research. It is noticed that the Portuguese language is understood by deaf students as a second language used not only in the formal space of the school, but in all their social surroundings. The Portuguese language learning process takes place in a playful way, through games and the use of various pedagogical resources.
