RESUMO:

African-Brazilian Literature enters the literary space with greater representativeness in contemporary writing. It is an art that contemplates the experience of black people in society through the recovery of memories, experiences and ways of life in a relationship of time, space and history. Thereby, the purpose of this research is to reflect on African-Brazilian literature from the novel Um defeito de cor (2006), by Ana Maria Gonçalves, emphasizing the recovery of collective memory and orality as a narrative strategy. By privileging aspects of African ancestry and the current nature of the narrative, we aim to unveil, in the architecture of the work, its central thematic motives and the formal aspects, in which the dialogue of historical themes with contemporaneity is perceived. For the elaboration of the historical trajectory of the productions of contemporary and African-Brazilian literature, in order to understand and critically analyze the novel by Gonçalves, the theoretical support was centered on studies of Bernd (1988), Munanga (1988), Ianni (1998) ), Gilroy (2001), Bosi (2002), Proença Filho (2004), Carneiro (2005), Assis (2008), Agamben (2009), Schøllammer (2009), Fonseca (2010), Dalcastagnè (2012). Um defeito de cor (A defect in color) is the second literary work by Ana Maria Gonçalves. The novel is centered on the character Kehinde, an elderly African woman who, at the end of the 19th century, already blind and at death’s door, travels from Africa to Brazil in search of her lost son for decades. During this journey, the protagonist reports her entire life from her mother and brother’s death, her first visit to Brazil, which begins her life as a slave, her manumission, her participation in rebellions and escapes, her return to Africa, her entrepreneurship and the return to Brazilian lands in the hope of finding a son he never saw again. Historical facts such as the Independence of Brazil, in 1822 and the Malês Revolt, in 1835 are immersed in the time and space of the characters, contexts that allow the creation of an exciting and believable saga of the history of Kehinde and all the blacks who represent the African diaspora in Brazilian territory. In order to discuss issues from the real to the fictional, approaching elements of narrative, discursive and memory strategies in the novel, the following theoretical references are used: Lins (1976), Halbwachs (1990), Dimas (1994), Nunes (1995), Canclini (1998) ), Le Goff (2003), Bauman (2005), Bhabha (2007), Ricouer (2007), Gonzáles and Coser (2013), Arfuch (2018), Candau (2019), Hall (2019). With Um defeito de cor, Ana Maria Gonçalves manifests the traces of the historical moment and social reality when approaching the formation of a people and a nation, rescuing Africanity in the process of building cultural identity. In this process, the memory is constituted as a tool for registering customs and traditions.
