RESUMO:

The caterpillar complex is limiting to cotton production, due to the damage caused to reproductive structures, such as flower buds and apples. A sustainable alternative for the management of this complex is the use of entomopathogenic bacteria, in large-scale production, on the property (on farm). However, there is little information about the viability of this production in the on farm model. In addition, the sucess of this management depends on studies over the compatibility of the bacteria in association with the phytosanitary products used during the cultivation. The objective of this research was to analyze the economic viability of the on farm production of entomopathogenic bacteria in association with phytosanitary products used in the management of lepidopteran pests of cotton. To evaluate the economic viability, the tools Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Profitability Index (PI) and Time of Return on Capital (PAYBACK) were used. The Minimum Attractive Rate (TMA) was 13.75%. For the in vitro compatibility test, 18 phytosanitary products associated with B. thuringiensis (Bt) were evaluated on the vegetative and reproductive growth of the bacterium (Biological Index). The selected products were tested on second instar S. frugiperda caterpillars, in leaf and artificial diet. From these results, mortality was evaluated in the greenhouse and field. The project demonstrated economic viability by presenting a positive NPV in the amount of R$15,495,665.59, IRR above the required TMA and the return on invested capital occurs in the first year and according to the profitability index, each 1 BLR invested will generate R$ 4.83. According to the results obtained in the in vitro study, the active principles Diafentiuron, Acetamiprid and Oxime Methylcarbamate were compatible with the bacterium B. thuringiensis. It is noteworthy that all tested fungicides were totally incompatible with the bacteria. The treatments Bacillus thuringiensis, Bt + Acetamiprid, Bt + Espinoteram, Bt + Methylcarbamate, resulted in more than 60% mortality of caterpillars after 7 days, when cotton leaf and diet were used as food substrate. Under semi-field and field conditions, the Bt + Methylcarbamate treatment provided more than 90% mortality after 2 days of exposure. Therefore, it is economically viable to produce Bacillus thuringiensis on farm for the control of lepidopteran pests and the use of Methylcarbamate is indicated to be used in association with the bacterium for the management of Spodoptera caterpillar in cotton.
