The complexity of rearing structures is one of the main problems for biofactories and laboratories, since some entomopathogenic microorganisms such as the Spodoptera frugiperda virus, multiple nucleopolyedrovirus (SfMNPV) have as their specific host only S. frugiperda caterpillars, making it difficult to mass produce this agent. biological “in vivo”. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the in vivo production method of SfMNPV in S. frugiperda within modular structures, based on the construction of a practical structure that would serve an average grain cultivation property (about 4.000 ha). The objective was to establish the best structural configuration, as well as to quantify operating expenses and the feasibility of costs and processes. To this end, modular structures were developed in containers for the production of caterpillars. Each container is 6 x 3m in size, with eight 100 x 40cm shelves with individual lighting between the divisions, for the rearing of S. frugiperda, which includes cages for moths and plastic containers with an artificial diet for caterpillars or for the allocation of caterpillars infected with the virus. Aiming at maintaining the temperature (25°C), humidity (60%) and photophase (12 h), an automated control system was installed in each container working indefinitely for the acclimatization of S. frugiperda. It was possible to reach the maximum production within the breeding unit, with a working operation of four people with a workload of 40 hours per week, to, on average, produce 42,000 caterpillars monthly at a cost of R$ 2.34 per unit produced. These are later sent to the contamination unit, so that, in instar L3, they are inoculated and frozen after 144 hours, for baculovirus storage, providing about 3000 liters of final product for application, according to the assets already used in the culture and approved. by the agriculture ministries, for the control of S. frugiperda.
