RESUMO:

Ecosystem services are a set of important mechanisms for maintaining the human population and encourage conservation measures that tend to value the various services offered by nature, such as carbon storage by plants. The objective of this work was to evaluate the carbon stocks and species diversity of legal reserves in typical cerrado areas of properties of different sizes, verifying the potential economic values that could be attributed to this service and the financial viability for implementing PSE projects. (Payment for Ecosystem Services). We carried out the study on six rural properties, located in the Cerrado-Amazonia transition, two small (< 500 ha), two medium-sized (500 to 6,500 ha) and two large (> 6,500 ha). On each property, we calculated and estimated species richness, individual density and above-ground carbon for all plants with diameter at soil height (DAS) between 5.0 to 9.9 cm (young) and DAS > 10 cm (adults). In relation to young individuals, the carbon stock, the density of individuals and the species richness were higher in small (PP_02) and large (GP_02) properties, which may be related to the integrity of these areas, which despite being They have different sizes and are well preserved and are infrequently burned. In relation to adult individuals, small (PP_01) and large (GP_01) properties stood out with greater density, richness and carbon. These two properties show signs of recurring fires. Larger individuals have a greater capacity to withstand the immediate actions of fire, which may explain these results. On the other hand, on properties where fire is recurrent, the density and richness of young individuals is limited, which can harm post-fire recovery in these areas. The study areas offer potential in carbon fixation and storage and feasibility of implementing PSE regardless of property size, since carbon did not differ between property sizes. Therefore, cerrado areas have high potential for the implementation of PSE. However, frequent fires can affect the ecosystem services of savanna formations in the Cerrado.
