RESUMO:

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of landscape metrics on total abundance, frugivore and nectarivore abundance, richness, taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity of bat assemblages in fragmented habitats in a Cerrado-Amazon transition area located in the state from Mato Grosso, Brazil. In this study we inserted predictor variables related to the fragment and the landscape. We extracted landscape-related metrics within a 5 km buffer, based on the distance used by most bats to forage daily. We performed a generalized linear model (GLM) to identify which landscape features have an effect on the structure of phyllostomid bat assemblages. Only vegetation cover and the percentage of adjacent matrix were shown to be important predictors for bat abundance in fragmented landscapes in this transition zone. We note that fragment size and adjacent matrix are the only metrics that negatively impact taxonomic diversity, and functional diversity respectively, while none of the other metrics impact phylogenetic diversity. Our results demonstrate that bat assemblages respond partially to forest fragmentation. Our hypothesis that habitat fragmentation would influence all diversity patterns was not supported, as the analyzed predictors showed effects only on bat abundance in this Cerrado-Amazon transition zone. Even though our results demonstrate that bats are less vulnerable to fragmentation, we recommend that it is important to maintain and preserve forest patches in the midst of pasture and crop matrices. Because preserving the integrity of the habitat contributes to these individuals performing functions within ecosystems in landscapes that suffer anthropic actions.
