RESUMO:

Hydroelectric dams impact the structure and functioning of riparian ecosystems due to changes in hydrological conditions. The objectives of the present study were to investigate the floristic relationships between riparian ecosystems associated with hydroelectric dams built in the Brazilian Amazon and to elect the predictors of variation in the composition and tree richness of these ecosystems. We seek to solve the following questions: (1) how are different ecosystems in the Brazilian Amazon affected by hydroelectric plants related floristically? (2) how do large and small scale environmental variations affect tree composition and richness? We reviewed the main online databases in order to access the floristic lists of studies conducted in the area of influence of hydroelectric dams in the period after the start of operation. We consulted several databases that incorporate information on climate, soil and topography to obtain 56 environmental variables with a spatial resolution of 1 km. We found that the floristic variation between the different ecosystems of the Amazon Basin affected by hydroelectric dams is conditioned to the synergistic action of environmental predictors and spatial filters, so that geographically closer sites were more similar in terms of tree species composition. Local environmental factors were decisive in the process of assembling the communities, among which we highlight wind speed, elevation, presence of coarse fragments and probability of occurrence of rock in the ground, as well as precipitation in the coldest quarter. Through the predictors selected by the model and the intrinsic characteristics of the plants associated with dams, we suggest that when they are forced to colonize the highest altitudes seeking refuge against the anoxic conditions of the flood filter, they need to cross the slope barrier and, when they reach the highest altitudes, deal with the typical rockiness of shallower soils. We suggest avoiding the installation of dams in low-lying, extensive lowland areas in order to reduce the mortality of flood-stress-intolerant species and that government efforts explore alternative sources of energy.
