RESUMO:

The process of dispersion and introduction of an exotic species into a new environment is a cause for concern, as it can lead to various environmental and social damages, promoting new interspecific interactions in the colonized environment. Among the various bioinvasions, those that occur in aquatic and semi-aquatic systems are particularly complex, as they are usually challenging to observe and monitor. Reptiles constitute an important group containing invasive species, as they are challenging to control post-invasion. The Pantanal, in turn, with its hydrological cycles and different aquatic environments, is favorable to the occupation of species that use these habitats. Therefore, notifying and monitoring bioinvasions in the Pantanal becomes important, as the early years of invasion are crucial for understanding the patterns of species occupation in a new habitat. In this thesis, we provide the first information about the bioinvasion of Podocnemis unifilis in the Pantanal of Cáceres. The thesis is presented in three chapters: The first chapter is titled "The midday sun reveals what the waters hide: Podocnemis unifilis Troschel, 1848 (Testudines, Podocnemididae), another exotic species in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso." In this chapter, we present the first scientific records of P. unifilis in the Paraguay River basin. Through a bibliographic analysis of historical elements and species distribution, we report the arrival of P. unifilis to the Paraguay River. The second chapter, titled "Mapping a bio-occupation: The dynamics of nesting sites used by Podocnemis unifilis in the Paraguay River, Cáceres-MT," involves a survey of egg-laying locations for the species, visiting various beaches along a stretch of the Paraguay River near the urban center of Cáceres. The third chapter is titled "The challenges of living far from home: Reproduction of an invasive population of Podocnemis unifilis (Testudines: Podocnemididae) in the Paraguay River." In this chapter, we selected three beaches with P. unifilis nesting and analyzed the main reproductive parameters of the species for the Paraguay River. Thus, our study provides the first information regarding a new bioinvasion in the Pantanal, allowing us to understand the process of species occupation in a new environment. It is a recent introduction, providing valuable information for monitoring and controlling the species in the region.
