RESUMO:

Objective: To know the prevalence and socio-environmental conditions related to infections by geo-helminths in the Brazilian population in the last ten years. Material and method: a systematic review of publications on the prevalence of geo-helminths in Brazil was carried out with a 2010-2020 time frame. Descriptive statistics was used to calculate the percentages of prevalence of geo-helminths and sociodemographic data. Results: The research resulted in 39 studies included in the analyzes. Scientific publications in the area of human infection by geo-helminths are stable in Brazil, with a greater number of studies carried out in the Southeast and Northeast regions. When analyzing the general prevalence of the selected studies, we found a prevalence of 41%, showing that the general picture of geo-helminthiasis in Brazil in the last ten years is significantly high. In the distribution of samples by sex and age, the highest prevalences are in males (55%) and in those under 18 years old (99%). The general prevalence by state presented higher percentages in Sergipe (82%) and Pernambuco 78%. Ascaris lumbricoides was the most prevalent geo-helminth with 45%. Among the studies that evaluated the environmental and socioeconomic factors related to infections, 48% of them highlighted that the precarious health infrastructure is a predisposing factor. Conclusion: The present study revealed a high prevalence of geo-helminths in the Brazilian population. The most prevalent geo-helminth identified was Ascaris lumbricoides. Among the main factors associated with infections by geo-helminths reported in the research, we highlight the precarious sanitary infrastructure, the low socioeconomic level, inadequate hygiene habits and poor water quality. It is necessary for governmental organizations to carry out the process of sensitizing the population about the prevention and care that must be taken in order not to spread geo-helmintic infections.
