RESUMO:

This dissertation was developed within the framework of the Postgraduate Program in Linguistics at the State University of Mato Grosso, aligned with the research line Studies of Processes of Social Language Practices (Applied Linguistics). The study delves into the repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic, which exacerbated challenges in Brazilian education due to the technical, pedagogical, and social adjustments required for the implementation of Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT). The overarching goal of this research was to investigate the challenges faced by a high school Portuguese language teacher in a private school in Cáceres-MT during ERT. It is a qualitative research, a case study, grounded in the Theory of Complex Dynamic Systems. This theoretical framework was chosen to provide a comprehensive view of the adaptive dynamics related to the teaching practices of the participating teacher in this study. The research corpus consists of narratives from this teacher, categorized through a semi-structured interview, observations and notes recorded in a field diary, and documentary records of activities conducted by the teacher during ERT. The research underscored that the pandemic highlighted the crucial role of Portuguese language teachers in the abrupt transition to remote teaching. Furthermore, it elucidated the enabling potential of digital technologies, functioning as mediators of pedagogical practices. Confronting the challenge of ERT emphasized the need for resilience in the face of rapid and unpredictable changes. Ultimately, in addition to addressing the unique trajectory of the focal teacher, the research contributes to discussions regarding the future of Portuguese language education in an ever-evolving educational landscape.
