Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) is a visual-spatial language considered the sign language of deaf Brazilians. Linguistic variation is a process inherent to natural languages, which manifests sociocultural differences, and does not harm the possibility of communication and understanding between speakers. Variations are abundant in social significance. Languages constantly transform themselves, giving rise to different ways of saying the same thing, which sociolinguistics conceptualizes as linguistic variation. This time, this thesis entitled “Linguistic variations in Libras in the Amazon context: a study in the state of Rondônia”, is the result of a research that was developed in the area of Linguistics, in the line of concentration of the Study of Variation and Change Processes, which aimed to inventory and linguistically describe the linguistic variations in Libras, which occur in the state of Rondônia, regarding the morphophonological composition of Libras and record the linguistic neologisms of this language. The methodology that directed the research was based on the variationist theoretical perspectives founded by Labov. To carry out this research from a Sociolinguistic perspective, firstly the theme was chosen, the community to be researched was stipulated, four municipalities in the state of Rondônia were selected, among which are Vilhena, Cacoal, Porto Velho and Guajará Mirim. The sample consisted of twenty-four participants, thirteen females and eleven males, with ages ranging between 18 and 48 years old. The development of the research was carried out in two stages, the first in September 2022 and the second in November 2022, where the signals were recorded through filming and later transformed into drawings and morphophonologically analyzed. The research was developed with the participation of 24 deaf informants, 06 (six) from each selected municipality. The organization of lexical items was based on the culture of Rondônia state, where fifty (50) lexical items were selected, arranged in five semantic categories. In this research, linguistic variations and linguistic neologisms of Libras were considered, the signs that presented changes in the morphophonetic aspect of Libras, for this purpose, the analysis was based on the signs recorded in the Trilingual Encyclopedic Dictionary of Brazilian Sign Language, volumes I, II and III (Capovilla; Raphael; Temoteo; Martins, 2019). It is understood that sign languages, like other oral languages, are dynamic and constantly evolving. Sign languages expand, transform and modify their lexicon, which was confirmed through the research carried out. What can be concluded through this research is that local culture does not influence the creation of signs directly, but the creation of new signs and the variations that were recorded are influenced by visual culture, which deals with the diversity of the images universe. The registered variations present a wealth of details, which are visualized in the daily life of each informant, and with the need to create signs, this visual information is inserted in the creation of these new signs and variations of Libras signs, which vary from informant to informant. The deaf person is a being who has a particular way of understanding the world, which is adjusted according to their visual perceptions.
