RESUMO:

The main aim of this research is to investigate, through narrative research (Barcelos, 2020), the experience of using the structured English teaching materials adopted by state schools in Mato Grosso, in the Araguaia Xingu region. The specific objectives are to explore the perceptions of English teachers about the structured teaching system, and understand how teacher autonomy occurs in the face of experiences within this system. The research participants are six English teachers from state schools in the Araguaia Xingu region of the state of Mato Grosso. The theoretical background draws on studies on teacher autonomy (Contreras, 2012; Benson, 2006; Leffa, 2014, 2003; Celani, 2001; Adrião et al., 2009, 2022; Hoffmann, 2020). The main source of data collection is the semi-structured narrative interview, through which teachers narrate their experiences using structured teaching materials. The analysis of the narratives takes place from a categorical-content perspective (Lieblich et al., 1998). The analysis is anchored in the types of autonomy established by Contreras (2012), such as illusory autonomy, autonomy as individual moral responsibility, and autonomy as emancipation. The data indicate that structured teaching materials have limited teaching autonomy, causing teachers to experience illusory autonomy in their teaching practices. Autonomy as individual moral responsibility and autonomy as emancipation, in this context, appear timidly in some attitudes and actions of teachers. This demonstrates that there is a desire, on the part of teachers, to exercise autonomy as emancipation.
