RESUMO:

This study, part of the research line "Study of Processes of Social Practices of Language" in the Stricto Sensu Postgraduate Program in Linguistics at UNEMAT, focuses primarily on proposing strategies for institutional support for deaf students in the context of higher education. To contextualize the choice of the topic, it is worth mentioning that with the recognition of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) as the natural language of deaf Brazilians (Law 10.436/2002 and Decree 5.626/2005), the creation of undergraduate courses for the training of Libras teachers and interpreters began nationwide in 2006. This new context has brought a growing number of deaf students and teachers to higher education classrooms, creating an environment of interaction between individuals who use two different languages: Libras and Portuguese, which have disparate modes of perception and production. The former is visuospatial, while the latter is oral-auditory, making it a bilingual and bimodal environment. This scenario has emerged as a broad field of research, considering the involvement of different languages, cultures, and identities that interact in situations of constant distancing and approximation, highlighting the need for concrete reflections on pedagogical practices for teaching and learning Portuguese to meet the specific demands of deaf and hearing students in the same educational space. To support our thesis, we found theoretical foundation in the studies by Barbosa and São Bernardo (2017), under the denomination "Portuguese as a Host Language" - a research and teaching specialty of Portuguese aimed at foreign refugees in Brazil who lack knowledge of a new language to restart their lives in the host country. The association with this denomination is justified due to the similar situation of social vulnerability that deaf Brazilians experience daily in various spheres, given the linguistic barriers in different situations where knowledge of written Portuguese is necessary. Specifically in the academic environment, we have observed that deaf students enter higher education with significant gaps in knowledge of Portuguese (as second language) and Libras (as first language), considering that both subjects are not yet included in Basic Education. These gaps in language learning interfere with the development of any and all knowledge, leading to constant conflicts and misunderstandings in various communication situations, causing traumas and reinforcing stigmas that further separate deaf and hearing Brazilians due to their use of different languages. Thus, the deaf individual is being configured as a foreigner in their own country, without access to information, always dependent on third parties (interpreters, friends, or family members). In this case, the borders are social, established between deaf and hearing individuals from the same nation but who use distinct languages. The results of this investigation will greatly contribute to advancements in pedagogical practices in bilingual and bimodal environments, promoting more suitable education for the specific needs and potentials of this target audience.
