RESUMO:

The study developed had, as its main objective, to understand how the relationship between language, speech and linguistic variation occurs in the school space. The research also analyzes the linguistic prejudice that occurs through the process of linguistic variation in the speech of students who live and study in the countryside, in a public school in the state of Mato Grosso. In order to do so, this research is based on the works of authors who are part of the sociolinguistic theory, such as William Labov (2008), Luis-Jean Calvet (2002), Stella Maris Bortoni-Ricardo (2005), Magda Soares (2005), as well as Marcos Bagno (2007), who relate the language with the issues of language teaching - under the slope known as educational sociolinguistics. Among the methodological procedures adopted for data collection, there are interviews with 2nd and 3rd year high school students of the Santa Rosa State School, located in the rural area of São José dos Quatro Marcos-MT. At the same time, the research also counted on the participation of two collaborators, both teachers of Portuguese Language, active in the school context in vogue and belonging to the community where the rural school is located. Based on the theoretical and methodological discussion, as well as on data collection through, the analysis of interviews and direct contact with the collaborators of this study, we describe the variants of the school community, facing the teaching process in detriment of the Brazilian Portuguese official norm and, in fact, how this process potentially interferes in the formation of the same. In this movement, we observe that the linguistic variation and change that materializes in the peasant speech of the speech community under study has, over the years, been disappearing in the school environment studied. It is pertinent that we incline a cautious look at the continuing education of teachers who work in the school, so that language teaching can be worked effectively and with interdisciplinarity in the most varied teaching contexts, valuing the peasant speech, preserving both the identity and the culture of these people.
