RESUMO:

We submit this thesis, which is entitled Visual/digital elements and discursive circulation: emojis in/from social networks, in line with the Study of Discursive Processes, of the Graduate Program in Linguistics, of the State University of Mato Grosso (PPGL/ UNEMAT). We propose to discuss the visual/digital elements, constituted in emojis, specific to/for the digital environment, whose term is a consequence of the junction between (and) image + (moji) letter/word. Emojis are available on electronic communication devices, so when we open the dialog box, we notice a variety of images organized by categories, highlighting smileys and people, animals and nature, food and drink, activities, travel and places, objects, symbols and flags, etc. It matters to us understand the discursive functioning of these elements, so that we are theoretically affiliated with Discourse Analysis, as worked by Pêcheux, in France and by Orlandi, in Brazil, also considering as essential, the contributions of many other authors, who have much contributed with the theorization of complex concepts related to the discipline. Considering the technological context of social networks as a discursive space for the functioning of meanings, we ask: How are emojis signified and are they signified as a language? How do they produce meaningful effects as visual/digital elements? By delving into the universe of emojis, we seek to question the effects of representation, the supposed transparency of the meanings of the image that imposes a relationship with the thing, according to pragmatic theories of language. Thinking about a discursive configuration of visual language, the form of articulation with technology, the way to intervene in the memory of discoursive, metallic and digital, in the relationship with the subject and the senses, is that we selected the materials that highlight emojis in different ways meaning in cyberspace. As material for analysis, we selected a montage that circulated on the social networks WhatsApp and Facebook, supposedly giving visibility to the set of images from antiquity (the hieroglyphs), linked to the supposedly set of contemporary images (the emojis), whose montage is cadenced by the statement “4 thousand years later we speak the same language again”. In addition to this clipping, we selected some emojis, which play with the look and interpretation of the subject. It's part of this functioning the work produced by Emojipedia, which is responsible for the meanings of the images. From these materials, we mobilize some concepts considered fundamental in the theoretical/analytical path, such as interdiscourse and discursive memory, metallic memory and discursive memory; equivocation and contradiction, paraphrase and polysemy; production conditions; ideology; the question about the verbal and the visual; the different symbolic and significants materialities; these concepts made us better understand emojis as the materiality of social media discourse.
