RESUMO:

This research is part of the concentration area 'Study of Linguistic Processes', Research Line 'Study of Variation and Change Processes', of the Stricto Sensu Postgraduate Program in Linguistics, of the State University of Mato Grosso “ Professor Carlos Alberto Reyes Maldonado”. The objective was to understand how the relationship between language, speech, and variation occurs in the school space in order to identify attitudes of linguistic prejudice in the Santa Rosa State School, located in the rural area of São José dos Quatro Marcos-MT. Therefore, this investigation was theoretically supported by the works of William Labov, Luis-Jean Calvet, Stella Maris Bortoni-Ricardo, Magda Soares, and Marcos Bagno, who seek to relate language to teaching — the branch known as Educational Sociolinguistics. The corpus was generated from interviews with 2nd and 3rd-year high school students, Portuguese language teachers, and other school employees. Given the above, we observe that the rural school is a space rich in linguistic diversity, therefore, it is important that there are teachers in the area of languages qualified to value and preserve peasant speech since it preserves the identity and culture of a people.
