RESUMO:

This work, developed under the research line "Studies of the process of variation and change", and area of concentration "Study of linguistic processes", of the Postgraduate Program in Linguistics of UNEMAT, Cáceres Campus, aimed to analyze and describe, in the light of theoretical and methodological contributions of Sociolinguistics, the process of vocalization orality in the speech of residents of quilombola communities São José do Baixio, in Barra do Bugres, Morrinho and Campina de Pedra, in Poconé, the three in the southern region of Mato Grosso. The dependent variables analyzed were: i) the vocalic orality of [a] in nasal environment, and; b) the nasalization process of the vowel [a] in nasal context. For this research, we considered 1186 data which were analyzed according to linguistic and extralinguistic factors. Such data were compiled through interviews conducted with 15 native participants, men and women, of two age groups, from these quilombola communities. The data were submitted to investigation and analysis by means of the R computer program. The results show that the participants have a preference for the use of the phenomenon of vocalic voicing, which appears as a difference in relation to other varieties of popular Brazilian Portuguese. The study is relevant to the area of language analysis and description and may contribute to future research related to linguistic variation in quilombola communities, especially in the south of Mato Grosso, with the aim of knowing whether it is possible to find the same linguistic phenomena in other quilombola communities.
