RESUMO:

This work, developed under the research line "Studies of the process of variation and change", and concentration area "Study of linguistic processes", of the Postgraduate Program in Linguistics of Unemat, Campus de Cáceres, aimed to analyze and describe, in the light of the theoretical and methodological contributions of Sociolinguistics, the process of vocalizing the speech of residents of the quilombola communities São José do Baixio, in Barra do Bugres, Morrinho and Campina de Pedra, in Poconé, the three in the southern region of Mato Grosso.

The dependent variables analyzed were: i) the low central vowel elevation [a] in the nasal environment, characterized oral even with the presence of a favorable context for nasalization, as in “santo” [‘sãtU] ~ [‘saᶰtU] e “mudança” [mu‘dãsa] ~ [mu‘daᶰsa] the process of nasalization of the vowel [a] in the nasal context, standard performance of the Portuguese language.

For this research, we considered 1186 data that were analyzed according to linguistic and extralinguistic factors. These data were compiled through interviews with 15 native participants, men and women, of two age groups, from these quilombola communities The data were submitted to investigation and analysis through the computer program R. The results show that the participants have a preference for the use of the vocal oralization phenomenon, which means as a difference from other varieties of Brazilian popular Portuguese. The study is relevant to the area of analysis and description of languages and can contribute to future researches related to the linguistic variation of quilombola communities, especially in southern Mato Grosso, in order to know if it is possible to find the same linguistic phenomena in other quilombola communities.
