RESUMO:

Currently, the Guarani people are dispersed in several countries in South America: Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Bolivia. In Brazil, there are three major groups, according to Schaden's classification (1954): the Nhandewa, the Kaiowá and the Mbyá. The Nhandewa live with both the Kaiowá and the Mbyá and live in villages in the south-central region of the country. While the Kaiowá are in Mato Grosso do Sul, the Mbyá spread throughout the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Santa Catarina, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo. The present work deals with a study of phonetic and phonological aspects of nhandewa, spoken in indigenous communities located in the microregion of Grande Dourados, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, in which the Nhandewa indigenous people (who call themselves Guarani) and the Kaiowá cohabit. The Nhandewa and Kaiowá speeches are taken as varieties of Guarani, a language belonging to subgroup I of the Tupi-Guarani family, Tupi trunk. The study proposes a phonological systematization of the nhandewa, starting from the phonetic description of the consonant and vowel sound segments of this variety, having as perspective of analysis the physiological and articulatory aspects of speech production, then, proposing a phonological analysis for it, basic theoretical orientation Pike's model of phonemic analysis (1947). Furthermore, the study is legitimized in the face of a need that transposes the study merely linguistic, reverberating also to the problem of the extinction of indigenous peoples throughout history. It is in this sense that the concern for research on indigenous language and culture arises, in this case the Nhandewa (Guarani), so that the individuals themselves can be proud and preserve the traditional knowledge of their people.
