RESUMO:

This thesis is part of the research line “Study of Variation and Change Processes” of the Stricto Sensu Postgraduate Program in Linguistics at the State University of Mato Grosso (UNEMAT) which aims to analyze the effects of linguistic contact between the Spanish and Portuguese on the Brazil / Bolivia border on the lexicon of the residents of San Matias (matienho spanish). Thus, through Sociolinguistics (LABOV, 2008) and Dialectology (THUN, 1998) the study intended to relate spatial characteristics simultaneously with social variables to demonstrate the lexical variation, the linguistic loans taken from Portuguese and their implications for the behavior of the matienho people. In addition, disciplines such as History, Geography, Psychology and Lexicology were used to support, within a multidisciplinary perspective, the analyzes produced on the border lexical variation. The research area covered constitutes of the urban and rural areas of both San Matias and Cáceres cities for comparative purposes, due to the geographic continuum that constitutes the two border municipalities, divided by the communities of San Juan de Corralito or Curicha (Bolivia) and the District of Corixa (Brazil). The methodology employed was based on the theoretical and methodological principles of Pluridimensional Geolinguistics (THUN, 1998) was responsable to highlight the lexical variability in the border area and demonstrate through linguistic maps the influence of Portuguese in the urban and rural areas of San Matias city. For the interviews, two questionnaires were used, the first one to analyze the linguistic attitudes of the informants and the second one to collect lexical data based on the ALIB's Semantic-Lexical Questionnaire (Linguistic Atlas of Brazil). In all, 24 (twenty-four) informants were interviewed, between Brazilians and Bolivians, covering the diatopic, diastratic, diageneric and diagenerational dimensions. The production of the analyzes occurred from the treatment of the data in the SGVCLIN software (ROMANO et al, 2014), correlating quantitative and qualitative aspects for each linguistic chart. The results obtained point to the cultural, social and economic influence of Cáceres on San Matias city, reflected on the lexicon of the matienho people.
