RESUMO:

To build our identity as English language teachers, we face the challenge of 'mastering' a language
that is not ours and that is constantly changing in the different places where it is spoken; using a
structure that is fixed, but that can escape the rule, without prejudice to understanding; using
pronunciation of words that can be spoken in one way, but also in others. This conception of
language runs through the readings, beliefs, activities and attitudes of the teacher in relation to
different cultures, to the knowledge of history, the political focus that it is engaged, the contexts
that it participates. This perspective makes us suggest that it takes much more than attending a
higher education course to become a teacher aware of the global changes that affect school and
citizen education. As an English teacher, my participation in the Professional Development Program
for English Teachers (PDPI) has awakened me to the complexity of language teacher training and
the innovations that can be proposed in teaching and learning in the classroom, from effective
professional training opportunities combined with cultural training, elements that make up a
language and the elements that come before. Thus, the objective of this work is to register as a
learning experience of English teachers in a program carried out without outside influences on their
pedagogical practices, personal and professional identity. This is a case study, carried out through
exploratory research. For that, we analyzed the answers to some of the questions asked by means of
a questionnaire for 15 (fifteen) participants of the PDPI 2018. The results obtained that investments
in programs of this type, which aligned knowledge, culture and practice can consolidate the identity
of the teacher of Languages, and consequently, bring benefits to foreign language education in Brazil.
