RESUMO:

The nature of the language is in a constant changing process, as it is conditioned to the uses of speakers in different contexts of socio-cultural interaction. Among the innumerable natural languages most used today, the English language stands out, for having the status of a common language among different nations, in addition it is the language used in diplomatic relations. In the case of foreign language teaching, it seems that new technologies, such as television series are configured as authentic and innovative materials, as they allow contact with the language and culture to be learned. Based on the above, the present study has as central objective of investigating whether and to what extent some idioms of English broadcast in television series can assist in the process of teaching and learning English language and its linguistic-cultural variations in a public school in Mato Grosso. The research, therefore, is based on the works of classic authors of Sociolinguistic Studies, such as William Labov, Luis-Jean Calvet, Stella Maris Bortoni-Ricardo, Magda Soares and Marcos Bagno, who seek to relate language to teaching - the strand known as Educational Sociolinguistics. Among the methodological procedures adopted for data collection, there are remote interviews with some 9th grade students - English learners and collaborators in this study - through the WhatsApp instant messaging application. From the  data discussion, the possibility of learning the English language is recognized, as well as the use of variants of idiomatic expressions inside and outside the school environment, considering the linguistic and socio-cultural differences contained in the episodes presented in the classroom.
