RESUMO:

The language is in a constant evolution process, being continually changed by its speakers, in different contexts of socio-cultural interaction, that is, it is dynamic in nature, alive and subject to variations, as well as changes, being conditioned to the uses of speakers in society . Among the innumerable natural languages used today, it is noteworthy the English language is appointed as a common language among people from different parts of the globe, it is the language countries use to relate diplomatically or in war times. And in the process of teaching and learning English, we come across several ways to speak English, as we have people from different nationalities using this language. In the case of language teaching and, specifically, a foreign language in the context of public schools at state and regional levels, it appears the use of serials in the classroom and contact with authentic and innovative material make it possible to show the language and the culture from speakers of a given language. The student not only learns a new language, but also expands his world knowledge, through a contextualized language, thus making it possible to understand the way of acting and thinking of a certain society, which uses the foreign language to communicate. Our research, therefore, intends to be guided by the works of  Sociolinguistic Studies classic authors such as William Labov, Luis-Jean Calvet among other authors, as well as Stella Maris Bortoni-Ricardo, Magda Soares, Marcos Bagno, seeking to relate the language with teaching - the tendency known as Educational Sociolinguistics. Based on the above, the present study has as its central objective to investigate whether and how some English idioms broadcast in television series can assist in the processo of teaching and learning the English language and its linguistic and cultural variations in a public school in Mato Grosso.
