RESUMO:

This research aims to analyze the perception of students from a school in Mato Grosso about the representation of black characters in the legends: Romãozinho, and Negrinho do Pastoreio from the work Lendas Brasileiras by Luís da Câmara Cascudo. It is a research that brings a qualitative approach, basic nature, classified according to the objectives as an explanatory research with application of the focus group technique. And it seeks to discuss the students' perception from the storytelling process about the black characters inserted in them, thus reflecting the place of black characters in the representation regime presented by Hall (2016). The research addresses the trajectory of Brazilian folklore, discussing from the etymology of the word to its insertion in the field of Science. It deals with the concept of folklore, emphasizes the persistence of folklorists in preserving traditional cultures, deals with the traditions of Brazilian folklore and social representations in the universe of the social imaginary, as well as Brazilian popular culture in the view of Abreu (2003), Burke (2010) and Ortiz (1992), associated with the question of identity. The legend genre is conceptualized according to Rocco (1996), Coelho (1993) and Cascudo (1984). In addition, it discusses the concepts of perception, representation and folklore and correlates it to ethnic-racial issues.
