RESUMO:

Research problem: What are higher education student’s self-efficacy beliefs and how do they relate to problem-coping strategies and indicators of psychological distress? Objective: To analyze the perceived self-efficacy of students at the University of the State of Mato Grosso and its relationship with coping strategies and indicators of psychological distress. Materials and methods: This is an observational epidemiological study with a cross-sectional quantitative design, carried out with students enrolled at the State University of Mato Grosso. Data were collected through an online self-administered questionnaire that was sent in the students' emails, containing socioeconomic issues, lifestyle and academic factors, in addition to three scales validated in Brazil. To assess the students' indicators of psychological distress (symptoms suggestive of anxiety and depression), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale was used, and to assess the adaptation and coping strategies for problems or stressful situations used by students, we used the Coping Strategies Inventory. The Perceived Self-Efficacy Scale was used to assess the individual's beliefs about their ability to successfully perform a certain activity. These data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, at a significance level of 1%, 5% and 10%, using the SPSS 25.0 statistical program.
