RESUMO:

The present study aims to investigate the use of manipulative materials as a didactic resource for mediating the learning of mathematics for 5th-grade students with learning difficulties at a state school in the city of Tangará da Serra, MT. The research problem consisted of understanding how the use of manipulative materials can serve as a didactic strategy to mediate the learning of the four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) in students with learning difficulties. The study was conducted using the following methods: Literature review with a systematic literature review, which allowed us to provide context and support the discussion of data using Bardin's Content Analysis (1977). Documentary research with an analysis of official documentation related to the Learning Laboratory policy. Action Research - action research involves a cycle of "action-reflection-action," with phases of planning, including: a) Problem Identification, with an initial diagnostic evaluation to recognize and characterize the learning stages in which students are positioned and identify the abilities and limitations of each student. b) Data Collection through class diaries, observation, dialogue with the classroom teacher and pedagogical team, and learning assessment tests. c) Qualitative analysis of the collected data. Action research was conducted with two 5th-grade students enrolled in the Learning Laboratory, with pedagogical intervention using manipulative materials such as an abacus and golden materials. The results obtained indicated that the use of manipulative materials can be effective in mediating the learning of basic arithmetic operations in students with learning difficulties, facilitating socialization, conceptual concretization, operation visualization, repetitive practice, personalized learning, and solving everyday problems. These materials should be used with an approach that takes into account the individual needs of the students.
