RESUMO:

The Amazon is often at the heart of global environmental discussions due to its vast biodiversity and ecological significance. A crucial aspect of this complexity is the symbiotic relationship between indigenous peoples and the Amazon. These communities, holders of ancient knowledge and practices, are recognized as the most effective protectors of the forest. This study, adopting an interdisciplinary approach that intertwines anthropology and law, aims to understand the dynamics between indigenous peoples and the land, and how this relationship contributes to environmental conservation, preventing deforestation and environmental degradation. Through a deductive method and employing systematic bibliographic research with a qualitative focus, this analysis uses pre-analyzed data to discuss the definitions of traditional peoples, indigenous lands, and the role of these lands in environmental protection and the preservation of Amazonian biodiversity. The investigation includes a systematic review of books, scientific articles, legislation, jurisprudence, technical notes, news, and resources from official websites of national and international public institutions, as well as renowned civil society organizations, focused on indigenous peoples, environmental protection programs, indigenous legislation, and forest research. Studies from the exact sciences integrated into the research confirm the efficiency of indigenous lands as mechanisms of environmental preservation, surpassing other forms of conservation units not only in territories without official title but also when compared to different types of protected areas. However, the research highlights that there are still numerous challenges to ensuring the rights of indigenous peoples and the preservation of their territories, facing threats of a social, economic, and, more recently, legislative nature. In summary, this study highlights the vital importance of indigenous peoples in the protection of the Amazon, emphasizing the complexity of the challenges faced in maintaining this symbiotic relationship and the effectiveness of indigenous lands in environmental conservation. It underscores the need for a deep and interdisciplinary understanding to underpin policies and actions that ensure the continuity of this essential protection for the preservation of global biodiversity.
