Silvipastoral systems have proved to be a promising alternative for increasing productivity and recovering degraded pastures, especially in the Amazon region. However, characterization of the ecological functions of native tree species is still limited, hindering their use in such systems. In this context, the aim of this study was to generate information that would enable better use of Samanea tubulosa, known as bordão de velho, in pasture areas, especially the use of its fruit as a nutritional supplement for cattle. To this goal, three studies were carried out. First, morphological aspects of S. tubulosa trees present in pastures were measured and related to qualitative analysis of soil cover and forage quality. Subsequently, the fruits of this species were collected for analysis of the contents of dry matter, crude protein, ether extract, ash, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber and lignin, in addition to subjecting them to in vitro fermentation evaluations considering their use in different proportions in the animals' diet. Finally, a test was carried out to evaluate the performance (weight gain per day) and feeding behavior of Nelore heifers grazing on diets supplemented with Samanea tubulosa fruit. The results point to the potential of this species in silvopastoral systems, both because it contributes to improving the quality of the forage without interfering with its availability (Kg DM/ha) and because it acts as an important nutritional supplement capable of improving the performance of grazing animals.
