The agroforestry project of the Escola Municipal Prof. Benjamin Padoa emerged in 2003 with the completion of the construction of the new physical structure of the school, which left it without vegetation, with the need to occupy the empty space left in the school yard. Through the planting of various species, the possibility arose of using this system as a non-formal teaching space, for practical classes of science content, especially botany, and also to develop environmental education, since it is a cross-cutting theme that permeates all disciplines. of the curriculum and needs to be worked on in all years of basic education. Based on this premise, this research sought to rescue the history of how the agroforestry project was implemented at the Escola Municipal Professor Benjamin Padoa, as well as to present the constituent elements and mechanisms of the agroforestry system and its importance in the school context. The methodology used was through the application of a semi-structured questionnaire with members of the school community involved in the implementation of the agroforestry system, as well as analyzes of the pedagogical political project, documentation, videos and photographic records of the school archives and also laws and resolutions issued by the bodies of the Municipal Education System through the Department of Education and the Municipal Council of Education. Data analysis took place in a qualitative approach, rescuing the development of the project step by step, seeking to understand the motivation for implementing the agroforestry system in the aforementioned teaching unit and issues such as its use and importance for the school community, verifying the pedagogical potential of these spaces non-formal teaching. In the results, the respondents demonstrated that the agroforestry system of the Escola Municipal  Prof. Benjamin Padoa emerged for a very different reason than what was initially thought, considering that its implementation was, above all, a local need, both for the construction of the new physical structure of the school, leaving the ground in the courtyard completely uncovered and compacted, full of construction debris, very hot weather and no shade, as well as the occurrence of fires that were practiced by the entire population, even at the school, in the period without rain, exposing everyone in the school community to high temperatures and a polluted atmosphere. In view of the results, it can be seen that even without planning the planting of an organized agroforestry system, afforestation carried out through practical activities, allowed the creation of the agroforestry system at school and, through it, it was possible to explore its educational potential as a tool. pedagogical.
