RESUMO:
The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a legume with two centers of origin, a gene pool originating in
Central America, called Mesoamericano and another gene pool originating from the Andes in South America,
called Andino, described by Debouck and Hidalgo (1986) ). It is a widely used food in several continents of the
world, being widely consumed throughout Brazil, especially with rice. The common bean has a low cost, making
it an accessible source of protein for daily consumption, with approximately 25% of protein, in addition to iron
and other nutrients, for this reason it has become an indispensable food on the Brazilian table.
The high productivity of common bean currently is mainly due to advances in genetic improvement, increasing
productivity and reducing losses due to abiotic factors, such as water stress, and biotic factors, such as pests
and diseases. Common bean does not have high tolerance to water stress, so the choice of resistant genotypes
to compose the germplasm aiming at genetic improvement is of paramount importance for the development of
cultivars that combine productivity with resistance to water stress.
