RESUMO:

The gradual process of degradation of water sources in the southwest region of the State of Mato Grosso has caused several negative environmental impacts, which compromise the availability of water resources. Given this reality, this research aimed to evaluate the environmental impacts resulting from human actions in spring areas of the Ribeirão do Caeté stream sub-basin. The methodology used included: bibliographical research, documentary analysis and fieldwork, aiming to characterize the natural factors that condition water availability in the sub-basin; inventory and evaluate environmental impacts of anthropogenic origin in selected spring áreas and identify the socio-environmental perception of rural producers regarding the use and management of spring areas. The results indicate that the geoenvironmental conditions of the sub-basin are complex, especially regarding the tectonic structure and the variability of rock and soil types. This means that water availability is conditioned by the types of geological materials, as the covering and alluvial deposits, as well as the dolomites of the Mirassol d’Oeste Formation, create favorable conditions for the infiltration and underground storage of water in aquifers of the Porous and Karst types, respectively. Likewise, soils from the Oxisol and Neosol classes favor infiltration and, therefore, have a high potential for underground water recharge. However, deforestation resulting from intense human occupation in recent decades has compromised infiltration and, therefore, the recharge of aquifers. This deforestation process reached the spring areas, causing increasing degradation resulting from the environmental impacts that these areas have suffered, as expressed in the Environmental Impact Index in Springs, which indicates that 76.7% of the 30 spring areas selected for the study fall into the Poor or Terrible classes and the remainder into the Reasonable class, with none that fit into the classes Great or Good. Furthermore, the results of the questionnaire applied to the owners of these spring areas revealed that they do not have the necessary knowledge to adequately manage its springs, which indicates the need to implement measures that support adequate future environmental management of the sub-basin's spring areas.
