RESUMO:

The objective of this research, carried out in the river basin in the upper reaches of the Sepotubinha River, municipality of Santo Afonso - MT, was to characterize the environmental fragility of the soils in the study area. In this context, it also prioritized describing the physical characteristics of the local landscapes and how agricultural activity can contribute to the degradation of the physical environment. The research was carried out in different stages, namely: office activity in which authors discussing the topic were consulted. In this vein, books, book chapters, theses, dissertations and government websites were used. Mapping of geoenvironmental units (Geology, Geomorphology, Soil, Climate, Hydrography and Use and Coverage) and field work were also carried out. Regarding the study area, recognition of the location was carried out, in this sense, an on-site visit took place where we sought to understand the natural dynamics and transformations occurring in the landscapes. After this stage, specific points were selected where the landscapes were most representative. In this context, the locations where the trenches and mini trenches would be built were determined, and a road embankment was also prioritized. The trench construction work was carried out using a backhoe type machine. The last stage of fieldwork was characterized by analysis, identification of profiles and sample collection. To this end, the points were described with the necessary information, as well as the samples were collected and placed in numbered plastic bags. The samples in question were destined for the EMPAER and Agro Análise laboratories in Cuiabá. In the first laboratory, chemical and physical analysis of the soils was carried out and in the second, analysis of sulfuric attack. After the steps presented, maps of potential fragility and emerging fragility were constructed. The results of the research studies were relevant in understanding the physical-natural characteristics of the area, the transformation process and environmental degradation.
