RESUMO:

The balsa wood is a tree species native to the Amazon. Its wood has low density due to its rapid growth, which

 allows application in various segments of the commercial industry, especially wind power, with Ecuador being the 

world's largest exporter. Plantings were carried out in Mato Grosso in 2010, in the North and Southwest of the 

state, but in a speculative way, with seeds collected from different sources without selection criteria, which 

generated non-uniformity of the trees in the plantations, causing damage to the sector, discontent and

 abandonment. of the activity. In 2020, international investors came to Mato Grosso in search of balsa 

wood to supply the international market, however, due to lack of plantations, demand cannot be met. There 

is production potential in the state of Mato Grosso, but research is needed, especially regarding the genetic 

improvement of the species. Thus, this project aims to establish a micropropagation protocol for pau-de-balsa to

 obtain clones from matrices, generate more homogeneous plantations and thus meet the demand of the forestry 

sector.
